And They Laughed At Me is the winning project of the "Reporting" section of the first edition of the Deloitte Photo Grant, the new international photography competition promoted by Deloitte Italia under the patronage of Fondazione Deloitte and in collaboration with 24 ORE Cultura, the artistic direction of Denis Curti and the BlackCamera team.
The And They Laughed At Me project brings together more than 70 archival photographs, unpublished shots and stills. The selected images are characterized by an error: these are negatives that the artist recovered in his studio retracing his early years, discarded because they were imperfect, and which he chose to place side by side with photographs in which the mistake belongs to others, such as the lab printer or the camera itself.

Images charged with humanity, marked by the accidentality of everyday doing, in which elements typical of reportage alternate with conceptual compositions, where multiple visions are combined or photographs are manipulated with interventions or formal incursions.




Newsha Tavakolian started shooting at a very young age, around the age of 16 she was already collaborating with the Iranian press, later establishing herself as a photojournalist at international newspapers such as The Times, The New York Time or Le Figaro, and making reportages in different parts of the world. Her byline is particularly well known for her focus on telling the story of the plight of women and for founding the Rawija women's photography collective in 2011.
